Joe Rogan Supplements | What He Takes Exactly & Why

Thanks to his highly popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE), Joe Rogan is one of the most recognizable people and voices in America. His rise to fame has primarily been as a result of his former role as host of Fear Factor and his current role as a ring-side commentator on the mixed martial arts promotion company, UFC.

Through his podcast, Joe has made a name for his thought-provoking, comical and sometimes controversial views and interviews on a wide range of topics including politics, current events, philosophy, science, hobbies and martial arts.

He is a vocal proponent of health, fitness and sports. As someone who is known to speak his mind, Joe has not shied away from regularly mentioning the supplements, nutrients and foods he considers most important for living a healthy life. We take a look at his list of recommended supplements, the reasons he takes each and, where applicable, the brands he stands behind.

General Health

Multivitamin

Multivitamins is a broad category of supplements where ingredient composition varies from brand to brand. Nevertheless, true to their name, most will have a mix of essential vitamins (such as vitamins A, C, D, E and B-complex) but also minerals and sometimes other ingredient types as well.

During an interview with comedian Tom Papa on Episode 802 of JRE, Joe disclosed he took one packet of multivitamins daily to support his general health.

He prefers Pure Encapsulations Athletic Pure Pack, a brand that you can order from Amazon here.

CBD Oil

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is extracted from the cannabis plant and is used as a natural remedy for several ailments. Studies have found CBD oil can relieve pain, treat mental and neurological disorders, alleviate cancer symptoms and protect heart health. Research on CBD oil is still in relative infancy so there is no broad consensus on the effective and safe dose.

In multiple episodes of his and other podcasts, Joe has admitted to using and touted the general health benefits of various marijuana products including CBD. For example, during JRE episode 1235 with Ben Greenfield, he mentioned applying drops of 1,000 mg CBD oil to his post-workout muscle injuries.

His favorite brand is cbdMD’s CBD oil. However, I couldn't find it on either Amazon nor iHerb. However, you can't go wrong with one of these brands: FAB CBD (available on their official website here) or CBDistillery (available on their official website here).

AG1 (Athletic Greens)

AG1 (formerly known as Athletic Greens) is a multi-nutrient health drink that contains more than 70 vitamins, minerals and other ingredients. It is designed to support wellness in diverse ways including immunity, recovery, energy, digestion, hormonal balance, neural function and healthy aging.

Joe is one of the most prominent influencer partners of AG1 so it should perhaps come as no surprise that he constantly roots for the brand. He has mentioned he always carries a pack of AG1 when on the road to make up for nutrient shortfalls from the less than optimal meals. To his credit, AG1's composition does make a compelling case for its stated benefits.

AG1 is available on their official website only.

Anti-aging

Testosterone

Testosterone is the principal male sex hormone. It is responsible for the growth and development of masculine characteristics such as testes, sperm production, libido, facial and body hair, muscle mass, physical strength and bone density. Testosterone levels may decline with age. Women have testosterone too — except in much smaller amounts than men. Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may be prescribed to men with low testosterone

Joe has routinely talked about how TRT has helped slow down his biological aging and improved his overall health. TRT is a prescription-only treatment plan that must be done under a doctor’s supervision. Close monitoring is part of the program to ensure you are getting just the right dose for a positive effect and to minimize the risk of the hazardous side effects of testosterone toxicity.

Joe does suggest TRT should be a last resort especially for individuals aged 40 and below. He instead recommends opting for natural testosterone boosters such as tongkat ali and fadogia agrestis.

NAD

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD or NAD+) is a coenzyme that is central to cellular communication, energy production, DNA repair and slowing biological aging. NAD levels do however decline with age. Studies show NAD supplementation can slow down or reverse age-related conditions.

During a conversation with Bryan Callen, Joe mentions getting NAD IV injections as an energy-boosting, immunity-improving and anti-aging aid. On JRE episode 1234, Joe says he is working on taking nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), a precursor to NAD.

Note though that in late 2022, the FDA withdrew NMN’s designation as a health supplement and is currently investigating whether it should be classified as a drug instead. Some major stores such as Amazon have stopped selling NMN supplements. This does not however affect NAD and resveratrol supplements.

Joe does not make any specific brand recommendations but Solodate NAD+ Resveratrol does seem to have a good reputation in the market. You can order it from Amazon here.

Cognitive Health

Alpha Brain

During JRE episode 1437, Joe said he takes Onnit’s Alpha Brain to improve cognitive performance. Alpha Brain is one of the more established nootropic supplement brands and is designed to improve focus, thought flow and mental energy.

It is made from three proprietary blends and a couple of standalone ingredients. Overall, its ingredients include l-tyrosine, l-theanine, l-leucine, phosphatidylserine, oat straw, bacopa monnieri and toothed clubmoss.

You can buy Alpha Brain from the official website here*

*Please be aware that purchasing Onnit products from Amazon or iHerb might not be the best choice due to the high presence of counterfeit items and scams. For peace of mind and assurance of authenticity, we suggest buying directly from the official Onnit website linked above.

Nootropic Supplement

On his podcast, Joe says he takes one serving of Neuro 1 every day. Neuro 1 is a nootropic supplement manufactured by Lean1. It primarily claims to rapidly increase blood circulation and flow for maximum cognitive performance.

Specifically, it aims to improve memory, enhance concentration and boost mood. It’s ingredient mix includes tyrosine, alpha GPC, acetyl-l-carnitine, CoQ10, DMAE, huperzine A, alpha-lipoic acid, vinpocetine, phosphatidylserine, rhodiola rosea extract and ginkgo biloba extract.

Neuro 1 is available on Amazon (order here).

Nootropic Drinks

Joe talks about considering using TruBrain Nootropic Drinks for cognitive performance when talking to David Sinclair on his podcast

TruBrain aims to improve mental output, thought flow, memory, verbal communication, mind energy and stress resilience. It contains theanine, magnesium and a raft of amino acids, minerals, proteins and naturally occuring nootropics.

TruBrain is available on Amazon (order here).

Lion's Mane

Hericium erinaceus, yamabushikate or, more popularly, Lion’s mane mushroom, is a mushroom that gets its name from its white shaggy appearance.

It’s widely used in health supplements for reasons such as mitigating brain agingreducing memory loss, relieving anxiety and depression, lowering risk of cardiovascular disease, managing diabetes, fighting cancer, fighting off inflammation and strengthening immunity. On JRE episode 1035, Joe talks about using 1,500 mg of lion’s mane extract to improve his cognitive performance.

There are no recommendations on the ideal dosage of lion’s mane mushroom. Studies have found dosage of anywhere between 350 mg to 5,000 mg daily can have the desired effect on cognition. Lion’s mane is relatively mild and even amounts as high as 5,000 mg/kg did not exhibit toxicity symptoms during research.

Joe recommends Four Sigmatic Lion’s Mane Elixir which is available on Amazon (order here) and iHerb (order here).

Fish Oil

Fish oil’s primary nutritional value is as a source of the vital omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).It is known to improve heart health, cognitive function, vision, skin health, bone health, while reducing inflammation.

Talking to Rhonda Patrick on JRE episode 1178, Joe indicated he takes three tablespoons of fish oil for brain and heart health.

Current research shows 1,100 to 1,600 mg per day is the ideal effective dosage for EPA supplementation with 3,000 mg considered the upper limit of safe use.

Joe’s preferred fish oil brand is Carlson The Very Finest Fish Oil which you can order on Amazon (order here) and iHerb (order here).

Immune Function

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is the sunlight vitamin. The body produces it whenever the skin is directly exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D is a key factor in calcium absorption, immune strength and overall health.

Some foods such as eggs, fish, mushrooms and fortified meals, do contain vitamin D. However, it is not in adequate amounts to prevent vitamin D deficiency for people not getting adequate sunlight.

Joe takes 5,000 IU (125 mcg) of vitamin D every day going by his conversation with Rhonda Patrick on JRE episode 1474. He cites its role in improving immune and mental health. Research shows the upper safety limit of Vitamin D is up to 50,000 IU (1,250 mcg).

Joe’s vitamin D supplements of choice are:

Quercetin

Quercetin is a flavonoid (plant pigment) that naturally occurs in a wide range of plants such as berries, apples, onions, red wine and green tea. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties shown to mitigate cancer growth, regulate blood sugar, prevent cardiovascular disease, reduce swelling and enhance cognitive function.

Speaking to Mark Gordon and Andrew Marr on JRE episode 1589, Joe discusses taking 500 mg of quercetin twice daily for its anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties. Research suggests a dose of 1,000 mg daily may be the upper safety limit for effective use.

He does not recommend any particular brand but Naturebell Quercetin has proven to be one of the most reputable products in the market (order it on Amazon here).

Exercise Performance

Creatine

Creatine, a compound naturally found in muscle cells, is a popular supplement in bodybuilding and powerlifting circles. Studies show it supports not just muscle growth but also cognitive performance.

Speaking during JRE MMA episode 147, Joe talks about taking 5,000 mg of creatine to aid exercise performance and improve brain function. Research indicates creatine supplementation as high as 30,000 mg daily is safe.

He has a partner agreement with Onnit so naturally recommends Onnit Creatine Monohydrate. To his credit, Onnit is one of the most successful supplement manufacturers. You can order it directly from the official website here.*

*Please be aware that purchasing Onnit products from Amazon or iHerb might not be the best choice due to the high presence of counterfeit items and scams. For peace of mind and assurance of authenticity, we suggest buying directly from the official Onnit website linked above.

Protein

Proteins are a broad class of food nutrients that contribute to numerous cell processes. They are crucial to the function, structure and stability of body organs and tissue. Proteins help build body mass, repair tissue, drive metabolism and strengthen immunity. Proteins are made from amino acids.

On his social media posts, Joe has mentioned he likes eating protein bites and powders though he does not clearly state why he does so. Onnit Protein Bites is his preferred brand. You can order it from the official Onnit website here.

Mushroom Complex

Mushroom nutrient composition varies from species to species but generally includes a raft of vitamins and minerals. However, studies show they have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer effects. Mushrooms may also improve immunity, cognitive health, gut health and cardiovascular efficiency.

Joe discusses taking a mushroom complex supplement during an episode of his podcast. The objective is to boost his exercise performance. He recommends Onnit Shroom Tech Sport, a product you can order from the official Onnit website here.

Other

Probiotics

Probiotics are good bacteria and microorganisms, present in fermented meals as well as supplement form. Their primary role is the improvement of gut health. Like multivitamins, there is no universal standard on the microorganism quantities and strains that probiotic brands should contain. Still, many have from 1 to 50 billion colony forming units (CFU),

In an interview talking about his morning routine, Joe mentions he regularly takes probiotics. His favorite is Onnit Total Gut Health which is available on the official Onnit website here.

Glucosamine & Chondroitin

Glucosamine and chondroitin are naturally occurring compounds that are part of joint cartilage. While they are two distinct compounds, they are usually combined into one supplement used to manage joint pain, inflammation, injury and other joint conditions.

On his podcast, Joe shares his thoughts on taking a serving of glucosamine and chondroitin, a combination he says is vital for bone health.

He recommends Whole Foods Market’s 365 Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM, a product you can order on Amazon here.

Electrolytes

Electrolyte supplements are usually taken to balance the body’s electrolyte composition. They are most often used for hydration while replenishing key minerals such as magnesium, sodium, potassium and calcium that are lost through sweating during exercise workouts or other intense physical exertion.

During an episode of his podcast, Joe said he takes an electrolyte supplement for its hydrating properties. He roots for Liquid IV Hydration Multiplier which is available on Amazon here and iHerb here.

Exogenous Ketones

Ketosis occurs during a keto diet and is characterized by weight reduction and increased blood ketones. These ketone bodies are considered responsible for the weight loss of the keto diet. Exogenous ketones are supplements that mimic ketosis and raise blood ketones concentration without the keto diet.

Joe has mentioned on his social media accounts that he takes exogenous ketones to provide fuel for ketosis. He recommends Kegenix Prime which you can order from Amazon here.

Lutein+Zeaxanthin

Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids, the natural yellow and orange pigment in fruits and vegetables though lutein is found in egg yolk and animal fat too. Carotenoids can provide macular support and slow the onset or progression of eye illnesses

Scientists have not determined what is the right amount of lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation but they have suggested 0.75 mg/kg and 1 mg/kg daily may be the upper band of safe use for zeaxanthin and lutein respectively.

Speaking on his podcast, Joe disclosed he takes a lutein+zeaxanthin supplement for eye health. He prefers Pure Encapsulations Lutein/Zeaxanthin, a product you can buy on Amazon here.

Liver Capsules

Animal liver and especially beef liver is low calorie meat that packs multiple health benefits - so much so that it is routinely classified as a superfood. It’s rich in vitamins, minerals and protein. Not unexpected since the liver actually serves as a nutrient store in animals.

On an episode of his podcast, Joe talks about taking live capsules for liver support and health when on a ‘carnivore diet’. He recommends Heart & Soil Beef Organs Complex which you can order on Amazon here.

Wrapping Up

As host of Spotify’s most popular podcast, Joe Rogan has enormous reach. While his commentary is characterized by humor (he’s also a standup comedian after all), people take his health views seriously. He does have endorsement deals with a number of supplement makers but usually that does not take away from the reputation of the brands he recommends. You do not have to go with the entire set — pick and choose the ones that are best aligned with your health goals.
